Control Element Outline Position with outline-offset
I was recently working on a project which featured tables that were keyboard navigable so obviously using cell outlining via traditional tabIndex=0 and element outlines was a big part of allowing the user navigate quickly and intelligently. Unfortunately I ran into a Firefox 3.6 bug where the element outline forced a horizontal scrollbar within its parent, causing the table to look....gross. After a bit of research, I discovered the outline-offset CSS property. Let me show you what it is and how it fixed the outline bug!
Face Detection with jQuery
I've always been intrigued by recognition software because I cannot imagine the logic that goes into all of the algorithms. Whether it's voice, face, or other types of detection, people look and sound so different, pictures are shot differently, and from different angles, I cannot fathom how it's all done. Since I already covered booby nudity detection with JavaScript, I thought it would be worth some time to explore face detection. Facebook uses it, so maybe it has application in your websites.
background-size Matters
It's something that makes all men live in fear, and are often uncertain of. It's never spoken, but the curiosity is always there. Nine out of ten women agree in the affirmative. Advertisers do their best to make us feel inadequate but tell us it can improve. Yes gentlemen...it appears that size matters.
Elegant Overflow with CSS Ellipsis

Introducing MooTools Templated
One major problem with creating UI components with the MooTools JavaScript framework is that there isn't a great way of allowing customization of template and ease of node creation. As of today, there are two ways of creating:
JavaScript and CSS Spinners with spin.js
I think it's safe to say the days of using images to provide the "small touches" are over. We can now safely create gradients, drop shadows, rounded corners, and scaled, rotated, transformed animations. It seems we've now moved on to replacing more complex effects, like spinner images. A great project called spin.js has surfaced, allowing developers to create CSS-powered spinners where keyframes are available, and uses VML as a fallback for Internet Explorer. spin.js is very customizable and is built with pure JavaScript so that no toolkit is required (though a jQuery plugin is available within the site demo). Let's have a look at how to use and customize spin.js!
Cross Browser CSS Box Shadows
Box shadows have been used on the web for quite a while, but they weren't created with CSS — we needed to utilize some Photoshop game to create them. For someone with no design talent, a.k.a me, the need to use Photoshop sucked. Just because we aren't good with graphic creation, however, doesn't mean that our clients wont effects like box shadows. Once such project recently popped up for me, so I sought a cross browser compatible solution for programmatic box shadows. Here's my solution.
Send Text Messages with PHP
Kids these days, I tell ya. All they care about is the technology. The video games. The bottled water. Oh, and the texting, always the texting. Back in my day, all we had was...OK, I had all of these things too. But I still don't get the volume of texts that I hear my younger female cousins send. Thousands and thousands of them each month. WTF are all of these texts for? Here's a thought:
